A business process is an executable, cross-component process. In a business process, you define all the process steps that are to be executed and the parameters relevant for controlling the process. You implement cross-component Business Process Management (ccBPM) when you want to define, control, and monitor complex business processes that extend across enterprise and application boundaries. Cross-Component BPM is integrated into SAP Exchange Infrastructure (today: SAP NetWeaver Exchange Infrastructure, SAP NetWeaver XI). Business processes are objects in the Integration Repository or Integration Directory and are integrated with the other objects such as message interfaces and the like. You define a business process by using the graphic process editor in the Integration Builder.
